The headlines call him a renaissance bluesman, and an artist who defies the rural blues myth.  Whatever you call him, Guy Davis is 100% pure blues.

Updates

News Flash

Guy's parents, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, are two of the recipients of the 2004 Kennedy Center Honors. "As individuals and as a team they have created profound and lasting work that has touched us all. With courage and tenacity they have thrown open many a door previously shut tight to African American artists and planted the seed for the flowering of America's multicultural humanity."

Careful viewers might spot Guy and his sister sitting directly behind their parents and right next to the president's booth!

Well, the new CD is out and we’ve got a great deal for you fans!   See the special offer to the left and below.

Guy’s brand new album, “Legacy” is a fantastic collection of originals and covers from some of Guy’s favorite ‘Masters’.  The lead off track is a whimsical but hard-hitting duet with his teenage son (where does the time go?), Martial.

The cover and liner notes were drawn by famed, award-winning graphic illustrator and comic book artist, Guy Davis of Michigan.  You can see his work on his website:

Guy always thought he was the only ‘Guy Davis’ out there, but it turns out there’s lots of respected artists in their own field, sharing the same name.  Foremost among these is the head of the Davis Family Vineyards in the Russian River Valley of California.  His wines have won numerous awards, and he feels this year’s batch will be his best yet.  So, he’s created a limited edition bottle of his Cabernet Sauvignon (Bluesman’s favorite variety).  It features a very special wine label drawn by ‘Artist Guy Davis’.

There’s other Guy’s out there.  There’s a self-professed ‘Computer Nerd’ up in Calgary, a faux finish painter apparently in Florida, who approached us earlier this year about buying this domain name, and a real estate agent in Texas.

So, Bluesman Davis will be out touring this Autumn and on into the Spring promoting the new ‘art’, his music.  We refer to the tour as the “Three Guys Named Davis Tour”.  Be sure to check the website regularly for itinerary updates.

In other news, Whoopi Goldberg’s animated series of Family Specials for Nickelodeon called, “Whoopi’s Littleberg” was well received.  No word on whether it will continue or whether Guy will be involved.  However, Nickelodeon has recently teamed up with BMG to create a label for children’s music.

Guy will be teaching at four music camps this coming summer (Dick Pleasant’s in New Hampshire, Jorma Kaukonen’s in southern Ohio, Common Ground in Maryland, and at the Alaska Guitar Camp.), so look for news about that soon.  Plus, we’re working on getting some of Guy’s songs put to sheet music, so please be patient and thanks for all the song suggestions.

Check out the Fan Pages where you can post comments and reviews of Guy’s performances and CDs or share a favorite story about Guy.  Plus, you can send us photos you’ve taken of, or with Guy.

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great New Year !!

Rich Warren's Midnight Special Favorites for 2004

First, an explanatory note:I refrain from calling these "The Best of 2004" because the following list is but one man's biased opinion. I have culled these from the many good recordings that crossed my CD player this year. I'm sure I forgot to include a few notable recordings. All told, I estimate "The Midnight Special" received at least 600 new recordings, and I listened to about 400  new recordings, of which about 200 made it into the WFMT library, and about 110 received airplay. I do not include reissues and most compilations among these favorites. As the cut-off date is November 1, some of the newest recordings will not be considered until next year.

It was really hard to boil my favorites down to a mere 14 releases this year. There was no insufficiency of great music. While I thought about these choices long and hard for several weeks, if not most of the year, had I made the list a day earlier or a day later it might have been slightly different.

Among Rich's favorites was Guy's Legacy:

Guy Davis has been steadily improving at his craft since he arrived a few years back. He has a natural understanding of his material and an intellectual vision of it. You'll have to actually buy the CD to see what his goal is with this recording, but there's a rather interesting booklet and opening track to say the least. (We can't play the opening track on the radio.) Besides top notch performances of well chosen songs, mostly traditional and a few original, there's a message with this CD that you will realize when you read his notes and listen to it in its entirely.

If a good friend visited from out-of-town with only an hour or two to spare, and asked me to play my favorites from 2004, I would play the following, in this case in no particular order. Actually, I have purchased quantities of several of them to give to friends for the holidays.

Guy and Odetta appeared at The B.B. King Blues Club on April 4, 2002 and and knocked the socks off the fans. Read all about it from the Newport Jazz in New York City Reviews.
